How many watts do you actually need?
Wattage is not temperature. A 150 W iron does not run hotter than a 60 W one — it just refuses to sag when the copper pulls heat out of the joint. Buy for the heaviest thing you solder, not the average.
Fine SMD, small through-hole, field repair. Enough for a joint you can heat in a second; not enough for a ground plane.
The right answer for most benches. Handles almost all through-hole and SMD work, and recovers fast enough to keep up.
Ground planes, shield cans, thick wire and connectors — work where the copper carries heat away faster than a 60 W iron can supply it.

Loose tip or heated cartridge?
Everything else on this page is a detail. This is the choice that decides how the station feels to use and what it costs to run.
If you solder occasionally, a loose-tip station is the better buy — the running cost is a rounding error. If you solder all day, a cartridge station pays for itself in the seconds you stop waiting for the tip to come back up to temperature.
Loose tip
The tip slides over a separate heating element. The sensor sits in the element, a little behind the joint.
Replacement: €2 – €5 a tip.

AT, ST or GT — which series should I buy?
AT is the entry line: simple, reliable, cheap to run, right for a school or a hobby bench. ST is the everyday professional line — LCD control, calibration, temperature lock, auto-standby — and it is what most working benches should have. GT is the intelligent line: the heater and sensor sit inside the tip cartridge and the station recognises which tool you plug in. You buy GT for recovery speed and repeatability, not for wattage.
How many watts do I actually need?
60 – 80 W covers almost everything. Below that you are fine for fine SMD and small through-hole work but will struggle on anything with copper behind it. Above 100 W is for ground planes, shield cans, thick wire and connectors. Note that wattage is about recovery, not temperature — a 150 W iron does not run hotter than a 60 W one, it just refuses to sag when the joint pulls heat out of it.
What is the difference between a loose tip and an integrated-heater cartridge?
On a loose-tip station (AT, most of ST, the ST-2080D/2150D irons) the tip slides over a separate heating element, so a worn tip costs a few euro. On a cartridge station (ST-1509, GT series, GT-2010) the heater and the sensor are built into the tip itself. Cartridges cost more, but the sensor sits at the joint rather than back in the handle — which is why those stations recover in about a second and hold temperature under load.
Which tips does each station take?
It is in the table above, and every tip series links to its own page. Short version: nearly the whole AT and ST range is on T900; the ST-100 takes the heavier T800; the ST-2080D and ST-2150D irons have their own T2080 and T2150 series; the ST-1509 uses T9150 cartridges and the GT stations use GT-Y.
Do I need a station, or is an iron enough?
An iron with the control in the handle (ST-2065D, ST-2080D, ST-2150D) does the same job for a fraction of the price and takes no bench space. What you give up is the stand, the display you can read at a glance, and calibration. If the iron is your main tool, buy a station; if it is a second iron or you work away from the bench, buy the iron.
