Clean the tip
without cooling it.
The ATTEN CS-05B is a pot of brass wool: you push the tip in, give it a half turn, and the solder comes off. No water, no wringing out a sponge, and none of the sharp temperature drop that happens every time a 350 °C tip meets a wet one.
It also leaves the tip better than a sponge does. A thin bright film of solder stays behind after wiping, and that film is what keeps oxygen off the plating between joints. A tip that is kept tinned lasts; a tip repeatedly wiped back to bare metal and thermally shocked does not.
Wet sponge or brass wool?
A soldering tip is a plated part, and the plating is what wears out. Two things attack it: oxygen reaching bare metal, and thermal cycling. A wet sponge causes both — it strips the protective solder film and drops the tip temperature every single wipe.
Brass wool avoids both, which is why it has become the default on production benches. The sponge still wins in one place, and the table says where.

Three things worth knowing
Brass wool is close to foolproof, but two habits carried over from sponges will cost you tips.
Wipe, do not scrub
Push the tip into the wool and give it a half turn. The wool is doing the work; pressing hard only bends the strands flat and shortens their life.
Leave the film alone
A thin bright layer of solder should stay on the tip afterwards. That film is what keeps oxygen off the plating — wiping it back to bare metal is the one thing you do not want.
Empty it occasionally
Old solder collects in the base under the wool. Tip it out now and then; the wool itself lasts a long time and is not consumed by cleaning.

Frequently asked questions
Will my soldering tip fit?
The opening is 44 mm across, which takes any ordinary soldering tip and handle comfortably — including every T900 shape we stock, and the tips used by the other ATTEN irons and stations. It is not brand-specific: it will clean any iron you own.
Does the brass wool wear out?
Not quickly. It is not consumed the way a sponge degrades — cleaning does not destroy the strands, and what collects in the base is old solder rather than worn wool. Emptying it occasionally is all the maintenance it needs. Pressing the tip in hard, rather than wiping and turning, is what flattens the wool and shortens its life.
Will it scratch or damage the tip plating?
No, when used as intended. The wool is softer than the iron plating and cleans by wiping solder away rather than abrading. What genuinely damages plating is the opposite habit: filing or sanding a tip, or repeatedly shocking it with a wet sponge.
Should I throw away my sponge?
Not necessarily. Brass wool is better for routine cleaning between joints, which is most of what you do. A damp sponge is still the better tool for heavy burnt-on flux at the end of a session. Many benches keep both — and the S11 stand has a sponge tray for exactly that reason.
What are the overall dimensions?
ATTEN publishes the 44 mm opening but no overall size, and the dimensioned drawing on the product photograph is printed too small to read reliably — we would rather tell you that than quote a figure we cannot stand behind. It is a compact desktop pot, smaller than a coffee mug. If the exact footprint matters, ask and we will measure one.
Can I use it with a hot air gun or a desoldering nozzle?
It is designed for soldering tips. Desoldering nozzles are cleaned from the inside with the pin and brush supplied with the station, and hot air nozzles do not touch solder at all. Using brass wool on either will not help them.
